DigiSkills SCHOOLS

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Every year, on 17 November, the greek schools honour the students who sacrificed their lives against the greek Junda in 1973.
Our school welcomed mrs Kalfakakou, professor in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, who was one of the heroines who fought against the dictatorship. A student at university those days, she became one of those that struggled, got arrested and eventually put in jail to be tortured.
Mrs Kalfakakou talked with the students who tried to connect the historical approach of the past with the reality of the present.

1st Lyceum of Menemeni is between the finalists in FOOD4U

THE 3rd EDITION OF THE EUROPEAN EVENT: “FOOD4U VIDEO FESTIVAL”

The Italian Ministry for Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policies has been promoting – since 2005 - FOOD4U (or rather “food for you” the sms variation) a schools awareness campaign, aimed at students of Secondary Schools (aged between 13 and 19 years) and their teachers from 15 European countries: Belgium - Denmark - Finland - France – Germany - Greece - Luxembourg - Norway – The Netherlands - Portugal – United Kingdom - Spain - Sweden – Hungary and Italy.
The aim behind the campaign is a highly topical one:

The aim of the campaign is to make youngsters more aware of the importance of being informed about their own food choice, to highlight the role and points of view of young people about nutritional problems, encouraging them to reflect upon the values of a healthy and correct food diet The students, through a Competition to create and produce TV video spots plus backstage, are directly involved in an interactive way.

The campaign culminates in the FOOD4U VIDEO FESTIVAL, an award stay of a week in Italy, (inclusive of air travel, accommodation, transfers within Italy and activities) to which are invited the Competition’s winning school groups (on average some 2 groups per country giving a total of around 350 students and teachers plus guests of organisations representing entities and public bodies from Italy and the other 15 countries involved, specialists, journalists, communications operators, European TV teams, staff from organisations, group leaders and campaign managers).

The event includes a programme of tourist and study activities on the region (excursions and guided tours aimed at getting to know the historical, artistic, cultural, and local wine and food heritage; meetings on topics of inherently nutritional themes and the exchange of experiences amongst the young about their eating habits, teaching workshops – recreational visits on processing typical products). The FOOD4U VIDEO FESTIVAL includes 4 evenings of screenings, organised in various prestigious locations, with the presentation, as a European premier, of all the winning Competition video spots. An international jury of experts will award to the best of these spots the prize: the “FOOD4U Award 2007” and the Cup of the President of the Republic of Italy.

Jorge Riechmann at Guaza.

Who's Jorge Riechmann? A famous Spanish poet (his grandfather was German, if you notice the surname). He's written a lot of books on poetry, although he's also well-known for having published many essays about preserving the environment.
He has just come to IES GUAZA to talk to us about his work. We have enjoyed the visit and we want to share a poem, "Se buscan desertores" ("Searching For Deserters") with all of you. (Sorry. It's in Spanish.)

Podcasting in Tønder - the schools own tv-news.

Tønder Gymnasium now has its own televisionstation. Since first of February the show “TG News” has been available for students, teachers and all others on the internet by podcastsubscription. “TG News” is a 5-10 minutes newsshow, that covers resent events connected to the school. The work is done entirely by volunteers amongst the students.
The project was launched by the schools two media-teachers, my college and I, and we are still pulling a few strings, but the students are increasingly becoming more and more independent.

Besides the obvious fact that the involved students learn a lot about televisionproduction and the role of the media, “TG News” also plays a role in the internal and external communication of the life on the school.

To watch available episodes of “TG News” (it's in danish!) the podcastsubscription-url is:
itpc://fc.toender-gym.dk/~pcast/FOV1-0001EF46/?Plugin=RSS&Leaves
I recommend using iTunes. Click here for a quick guide to subscribing to podcasts.

Wondering what "podcast" is all about? Click here for wikipedia.

“Kladaria” is the name of one of the customs which relate to the twelve-day-period from Christmas to Epiphany The necessary preparations, however, start as early as October. More specifically, on the next day of the feast of Aghios Dimitrios, i.e. on 27 October, children and teenagers provide for the raw material of this event; they run into the fields and the mountain slopes in order to collect brushwood and dead herbs. They mainly look for cedar branches as they have a special scent. The brushwood is stored in a dry place and remains there until it loses its moisture and dries up. On 23 December, the preparations start as early as early as midday. The brushwood is piled up in huge heaps in the open space where this rite is going to take place. The oldest inhabitant of the village lights the branches in the evening. Then, the locals form a dancing ring around the fire. In some regions, men with bells hanging off their body turn around the fire thus lending a character of an ancient Greek, Bacchic event to these ritual ceremonies which alongwith the scent of cedars create a very special atmosphere. In some regionsof Voio, the branches light upduring the carnival period, or morespecifically, on Cheese-Fare Sunday.(This year is on February 18)

1st Lykeio of Menemeni and European Youth Parliament

Our school participated the 14th National Conference of the European Youth Parliament. The conference was very well organised by the Executive Board of EYP Greece, university students themselves. The activities started with the teambuilding: the delegates played icebreaking games to be introduced to the others. Then, they had to communicate and cooperate in committees of 15 delegates to come to a resolution! The third day, all the committees came to the General Assembly to vote for or against the resolutions submited.

Zoe Otatzioglou, student of C' class, delegate of CULT (committee of culture) described her experience as a pleasant communicative approach, living process among students though it is a simulation of the European Parliament.

The students are encouraged to take an interest in current affairs and the democratic process, practise independent thinking and take personal initiative. They can express their own opinionswithout any political connotations and without reventing to role play.

Lucia festival at Häggvallskolan

The 13 of December, Sweden celebrates the festival of Lucia. The festival of Lucia is an old Swedish tradition that dates back to the 14oo century. In the old days the people celebrated Lucia to welcome back the light. This refers to the winter solstice, occurring around December 21 or 22 and is the shortest day of the year. The tradition has changed some during the years, but one thing remains the same the character of Lucia. As seen in the pictures Lucia is a women with a crown of light in here hair. During this festival our students sings traditional songs. Afterward the students eat a traditional cake called “Lussebulla” that contains the spice Saffron.

Walk on Water

Students from IES GUAZA, in Spain, have just seen the film Walk on Water, a movie from Israel, shot in 2004. People from 4th year liked it because it was a different kind of film (far away from US blockbusters). It was a unique opportunity to approach at the same time the Arab-Israeli conflict and the different ways of living our sexuality.
We highly recommend other schools in our project to spend their time watching this interesting movie.

The plot:
A hit man for Mossad is given the mission to track down the very old Alfred Himmelman, an ex Nazi officer, who might be still alive. Pretending to be a tourist guide he befriends his grandson Axel, in Israel to visit his sister. He wants to convince her to come back to Germany for their Fathers birthday party.
The two men set out on an extended tour of the country during which, Axel’s frank and open attitude challenges Eyal’s rigid, clichéd values. Their friendship grows until he learns of Axel’s homosexuality. With this final straw he leaves.
To finish his mission Eyal has to go to Germany. He meets Axel once more and succeeds in being invited to the family party where secrets will be revealed.

The Theatre Group of Regenstauf presents

(Written by Chr. Kelm & St. Schlehaider/ directed by Cl. Hoffmann & Chr. Kelm)
The title can either mean that something was no use doing it or that something doesn’t cost anything. This ambiguity stands for the plot of the play. 23 pupils from the 5 th to the 10th grade perform a story about a theatre, which is encumbered with debts. Will their efforts lead to a breakthrough or will the theatre have to close forever?
